How teams rank depends on their score. Teams that score higher in a game will obviously rank higher than those that fail to score. However, their progress is likely to be hampered by a weak defense. This is because the winners score more points, first down and eventual wins. Regular losers have fewer first downs and thus a lower score. This struggle with first downs and wins affects the ranking of a team.

Do not be blinded by an impressive first down rating. The ratings do not determine possession and neither do they determine the number of victories. An example is where Cardinals started their season with 3-0 yet were ranked number twenty seven in 2012. This does not mean that they should be ignored. Passing Attempts have proven over time to be crucial in determining the strength of winning and losing teams. An offensive team makes more attempts compared to a defensive team. The Passing Yard also signifies strength and potential. An offender gives you a higher chance of winning compared to a defensive team. A combination of both qualities is better at all times.

Time of Possession indicates the number of times a team remained with the ball. For a team to score and win, it must retain the ball for the longest time possible. A longer period also indicates strength. In some cases, the other team may be better in defense and holding the ball. This is likely to offset an offensive team. A combination of both traits is desired.

An average team can become great on the sole basis of Turnovers. Turnover indicates that the team is taking advantage of offenses by their opponents by converting them. Teams with a better strategy and talented players have posted better results when turnovers are considered. Penalties are also used for ranking purposes.
